Baroness Claire Tyler appointed as new Chair of the Cafcass Board

Baroness Claire Tyler has been appointed by the Secretary of State for Education as the new Chair of the Cafcass Board.

Speaking of her appointment, Baroness Tyler, who joins Cafcass from Relate said, “Cafcass works with 150,000 children each year and I am delighted to be appointed as its Chair. Its vitally important work brings together two areas that are very dear to my heart – protecting children from the negative impact of family breakdown and improving the outcomes for children in care. I have been impressed by the progress that the organisation has made in recent times and look forward to helping it to shape the future of services within the family justice system to meet the needs of children and families caught up in these difficult cases.”

Anthony Douglas, Chief Executive welcomed Claire’s appointment saying, “We are thrilled to be welcoming Claire as the new Chair of the Board. She has a great track record and has professional, political and personal credibility and nous. It is already clear she will make a strong and effective contribution to the next stage of Cafcass. I am looking forward to working with her and continuing to drive forward service improvement in Cafcass and in the wider family justice system.”

Baroness Tyler joins Cafcass on 23rd January 2012 from Relate, the UK’s leading relationship support agency where she has been Chief Executive since 2007. She has previously held a number of senior positions within Government, most recently as Director of the Vulnerable Children’s Group at the DfES (now the Department for Education) where she led the work on the Green and White Papers on children in care. As Head of the Government’s Social Exclusion Unit Claire led the team that produced a major report on children in care, as well as reports to improve the life chances of others vulnerable groups of both children and adults. Claire has also chaired the ‘Kids in the Middle’ coalition, a group of national charities and agony aunts campaigning for better services for separating parents and their children and was Deputy Chief Executive of Connexions, the youth support service. She is a working Peer in the House of Lords.
