Report released from Cafcass’ January 2019 Open Board meeting

The first Cafcass Open Board meeting of 2019 took place on 23rd January, and focused on the refresh of Cafcass’ Strategic Plan which is currently being developed.

The meeting started with an introduction by Edward Timpson, Chair of the Cafcass Board, who set out the reasoning behind our new strategy and our ambition to build on the progress that has been made since our ‘Outstanding’ 2018 Ofsted result.

Teresa Williams, Director of Strategy provided background to our new strategic plan, discussed the demands of the current operating context, and explained the proposed structure of the plan which is centred around three pillars: our Practice, our Partners, and our People.

The Open Board meeting continued with a presentation on improving service user feedback and outcomes as a key strand in our new strategy. Kevin Gibbs, Assistant Director, set out plans for further enhancing the voice of the child, and for seeking feedback and delivering clearer information at all stages. Building on this approach for children and young people, there were also plans to improve mechanisms for engaging with adult services users, for example by establishing Cafcass Family Forum.

The meeting ended with a question and answer session between Cafcass, board members and other attendees. Themes from the discussion included feedback and the proposed Family Forum, the Cafcass profile, and outcomes for children.

Cafcass’ Director of Strategy, Teresa Williams said: “It is important that we have a clear vision for the future of our organisation so that we can continue to deliver an outstanding service.

“The strategy refresh will allow Cafcass to develop as an organisation and improve its offering to children and families.

Our staff have been very engaged in the process and we welcome feedback from those external to the organisation too.”
