Putting children and young people first in the family courts

Parenting Plan and Family Meetings

Parenting Plan and Family Meetings are a free support service available to separated parents in Greater Manchester, Durham, Teesside, North Yorkshire and York.

The meetings will help you and your ex-partner to make safe arrangements for your children - such as who they will have contact with and where they will live – without the need to use the family courts.

Settle disagreements without the family court

At the meetings a Cafcass professional  will work with you and your ex-partner to help you reach a lasting agreement about raising your child after separating, by using a Parenting Plan.

Using the plan to reach an agreement with your ex-partner can be better than going to court, as it can help you:

    • avoid stressful and expensive court proceedings

    • make longer lasting arrangements, that work for you and your family’s circumstances

  • plan for the future and adapt arrangements as your child gets older

When Mark and his ex-wife divorced they struggled to communicate and come to an agreement about child arrangements for their two sons. They entered into family court proceedings and the situation became more difficult and stressful.

However, with the assistance of a Parenting Plan, Mark and his ex-wife were able to reach agreements on day to day arrangements and plan for the future.  We spoke to Mark about how the plan helped and why he recommends it for other separated parents
